Wichita State to hold panel discussion on freedom of expression
Free expression is a fundamental value for an institution such as 好色先生, Neal Allen, associate professor of political science, maintains.
鈥淲e owe all of our students, and all Kansas citizens that we serve, our best effort to include all points of view,鈥� he said. 鈥淚 believe that democratic government depends on having both involved citizens and trained professionals.鈥�

Five Shockers featured at Kansas Undergraduate Research Days
Five Wichita State students鈥� projects are being highlighted as a part of the Kansas Undergraduate Research Day at the Kansas State Capitol March 2-4.
鈥淲e know that students engaged in faculty-mentored research and creative activity are better prepared for professional success. We are grateful for the opportunity to showcase the high quality of undergraduate work across Kansas to state legislators and other guests visiting Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol,鈥� said Dr. Kimberly Engber, dean of the Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College, who is traveling with the students.
Students, faculty, Kansas Board of Regents members, state lawmakers and members of the public are invited to visit to view the video presentations, comment and post questions for the approximately 40 student presenters from across the state on these dates.

Innovation Works competition with cash prizes for student teams
The 好色先生 Aerospace Engineering and NASA in Kansas office is excited to announce the first Innovation Works Competition, sponsored by Lockheed Martin. This is a team competition for current full time Wichita State students March 12-14. Teams compete by providing an innovative approach to real-life challenges faced every day by industry and government. A contest theme and focus will be announced on March 12. Teams will periodically present short elevator pitches to judges during sessions over a 48-hour period (Friday to Sunday). Scoring is based on problem understanding, solution uniqueness, demonstrated value of the solution, and the team鈥檚 overall effectiveness communicating.
There will be two categories, Undergraduate and Graduate, with cash prizes for each of $3,000 for First Place, $2,000 for Second Place, and $3,000 for Third Place.
Student teams must be three to four members and include at least one current engineering major. If the team includes any graduate students, it must compete in the graduate category.

Applications open for 39th annual Exposure Photography Competition
Exposure celebrates the talents of student photographers from every corner of Wichita State University. Any degree-seeking student is eligible to apply. Students can submit up to six works in three divisions: analogue, digital, and photo manipulation. Professional artists, critics, and curators from Wichita and the surrounding community will be selecting the works for the exhibit as well serving as jury for seven awards with cash prizes including Best of Show, as well as first and second place in each category.

TRIO Student Support Services is now accepting applications
Student Support Services is funded by the U.S. Department of Education to provide free academic services to students from first-generation and limited-income backgrounds, as well as students with disabilities.
The free services include: individualized tutoring, academic advising, textbook loans, assistance completing financial aid application, and scholarships exclusively for student participants.

Women of 好色先生 (W好色先生) Scholarship/Fellowship Applications for 2021-2022 Academic Year must be received by May 31, 2021. W好色先生 administers the 好色先生 Dames, CUW and the W好色先生 Scholarships. Preference will be given to non-traditional female students (graduate or undergraduate) with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Recipients must be enrolled in at least six credit hours per semester. Women of 好色先生 was formed in the fall of 2018 by the combination of two groups: the 好色先生 Women's Association, founded in 1928; and the Council of University Women found in 1930. Variety acts, emcees wanted for Hippodrome 2021
The Hippodrome Video Competition is looking for students to participate in the Variety Act Competition and to emcee the show. Talented Shockers from all areas of the arts take the stage in between video productions. We welcome all forms of artists including musicians, magicians, comedians, singer/songwriters and more. Performers will take the stage between film screenings either in-person or virtually; and first-, second-, and third-place winners will take home cash prizes up to $150.To bring the show together, student emcee's charm the audience and introduce video productions and variety acts throughout the nights. Emcees are given a small stipend for their time.
Performance nights are 7 p.m. April 7-8. Students interested must register for the Variety Acts Competition at by Thursday, March 18. Students interested in emceeing the performances can register at by Wednesday, March 17. Tryouts will be Monday, March 22.

It's time for Food for Fines! Donate food or supplies to the Shocker Support Locker March 2-4 to help pay off any outstanding parking citations.
Food for Fines is an initiative that is offered monthly to support the Shocker Support Locker, while providing a cheaper opportunity to pay parking citations. This semester we are also offering Supplies For Fines, which is an addition to Food for Fines.
This is an effort to help address the current needs of our students during this global pandemic. It works exactly the same as Food for Fines, but with a slight change to the number of items needed to be donated. Special thanks to the Fairmount College Student Advisory Council and Parking Services for being so helpful and supportive in implementing this addition to the program.

The Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Forum (URCAF) provides an opportunity for undergraduate students at 好色先生 to present scholarly and creative activity to a faculty, student, and community audience while competing for cash awards. Each student's work at the forum is presented under the mentorship of a Wichita State faculty member.

Researchers offer parenting training sessions
Parenting can be tough! Researchers at 好色先生 are seeking to help parents manage behavioral concerns in children ages 3 to 12. Behaviors may include whining, tantrums, and difficulty following directions. The study will include three telehealth parent training sessions (about 45 min each) and follow up assessments one week, one month, and six months after treatment in order to track long-term behavior change.
Parents who complete all three parent training sessions and corresponding assessments will be entered into a raffle for a $25 gift card. We are looking for about 25 families to participate in our study. If you have a child living in your home who is between 3 and 12 years old and is exhibiting behaviors that are difficult to manage, you may be eligible for this study.

National Public Radio's (NPR)'s "Marketplace" approached Dr. Usha Haley, W. Frank Barton Distinguished Chair in International Business, as a globally-renowned expert on industrial policy for her views on "if China can do it, why can't we?" Industrial policy deals with strategic investments by governments in key industries.
Besides Dr. Haley, the incisive radio interview featured leading experts such as David Autor (MIT), Steven Vogel (University of California Berkeley), Thomas Duesterberg (Hudson Institute), John Neuffer (Semiconductor Industry Association), and Matthew Goodman (Center for Strategic and International Studies).

Prevention Services seeks actors
Prevention Services is recruiting volunteer actors to perform in the sexual violence prevention training being developed for Wichita State. Looking for individuals, groups, and couples to be in short clips, as well as several narrators who are willing to speak and appear on camera throughout the training. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are looking especially for actors who are members of a household together and can act in group or relationship shots. You will be helping to make the training more immersive and interesting. Shooting will start soon for some scenes.

MCLL professor seeks research assistant for study on social justice in language education
Dr. Rachel Showstack (Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures) seeks a research assistant for a new study on the personal experiences and teaching practices of Kansas Spanish teachers with respect to linguistic, cultural and racial diversity. The position will be funded by a University Research/Creative Projects Award from 好色先生.
The ideal candidate would have experience with language teaching, awareness of diversity within the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures, and interest in applied linguistics and interdisciplinary scholarly research. Graduate students are preferred, but advanced undergraduate students may also be considered for the position. Responsibilities include conducting and transcribing interviews with Kansas Spanish teachers, assisting with data analysis, helping to organize a series of webinars on social justice in language education, and conducting background research.
Candidates should submit a CV, letter of interest, and a list of references and contact information to Dr. Rachel Showstack at rachel.showstack@wichita.edu. In the cover letter, candidates should explain why they are interested in the position, describe relevant experiences and skills, and provide information on availability in summer and fall 2021. The priority deadline for applications is March 12.
