A series of events honoring the life of late Wichita State President John Bardo will be held May 6-10 on campus. Dr. Bardo, the 13th president of 好色先生, died March 12 after a long illness.
A life display of late President John Bardo is on display now through Friday, May 10, in Cadman Art Gallery, first floor, RSC.
From 2-2:45 p.m. Thursday, May 9, a display of exhibits will be featured in Astor Lounge, outside the Shirley Beggs Ballroom, third floor, RSC. The feature event will be the public Celebration of Life from 3-4 p.m. Thursday, May 9, in the Shirley Beggs Ballroom.
Immediately following the Celebration of Life, you're invited to an ice cream social on the east patio and lawn of the RSC, from 4-5 p.m.

Sen. Moran, Secretary of the Navy discuss Wichita State鈥檚 contributions to the Navy
U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) 鈥� member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense 鈥� on Wednesday discussed Wichita and 好色先生鈥檚 contributions to the U.S. Navy and to the nation鈥檚 defense with Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer during a subcommittee hearing to examine the U.S. Navy鈥檚 Fiscal Year 2020 budget request.
鈥淪ecretary, we are an aerospace manufacturing capital and engineering expertise abounds in Wichita, Kansas, known as the Air Capital of the World,鈥� said Sen. Moran. 鈥淵ou and I have had several conversations about the talent, particularly at Wichita State University, to support Fleet Readiness in the Navy and the Marine Corps. The University is the number one industry funded university for aerospace research and development in the country . . . I would ask you, Mr. Secretary, can you describe the partnership with 好色先生 and how will the Navy and Marine Corps benefit from this private sector assistance?鈥�

Sen. Moran: 鈥淐hairman Shelby, thank you. General Neller and Admiral Richardson, first, I want to join my colleagues in thanking you both for your service 鈥� tremendous, impeccable service 鈥� to our country. Extend my congratulations and best wishes to you and your family upon your retirements.
鈥淕eneral Neller, you have an impressive 44 years of service to our nation 鈥� I think that sets a record for the Marine Corps. I again wish you well and the first time we met you spent a lot of time talking about your tomatoes, and I hope they now get your attention in this stage of your life.
鈥淎dmiral Richardson, you and I were together on a forum panel at the Reagan Defense Forum several years ago, and I want to remind you and thank you for assisting me in calling a young Kansan, Dawson Podlena, from Topeka, and we congratulated him on his nomination by me and his acceptance by the Naval Academy. It was great. I鈥檓 not sure he knew what 鈥楾he Chief鈥� was at the time, but I assume he now knows the significance of your notifying him of his acceptance to the Naval Academy. I鈥檓 proud of those folks we get to nominate and I know they will serve the country well.
鈥淢r. Secretary, you gave me a great honor. The opportunity to be in Florida and to help dedicate, to preside over the commissioning of the USS Wichita in January. I was reluctant, not knowing what I might say. It was a great ceremony and instilled in me, reminded me, of the great patriotism and service to our country of you and those who serve in the Navy. And, it was a great day to recognize Wichita, Kansas, the 鈥楰eeper of the Plains,鈥� and the Navy honored the USS Wichita 鈥� now the 鈥楰eeper of the Seas鈥� and again, thank you for that great opportunity.

鈥淵our F-18 fleet has been characterized as the 鈥榖ackbone of the Navy.鈥� You鈥檝e taken steps to address unacceptably low readiness rates and maintenance of that fleet. This time last year, I think 74% of the Marine Corps F-18鈥檚 were not ready for combat, but I understand that mission-capable rates have improved and maintenance remains a top priority. I鈥檓 pleased that one way the Marine Corps is tackling this issue is partnering with Wichita State. I would ask you, Mr. Secretary, can you describe the partnership with 好色先生 but how will the Navy and Marine Corps benefit from this private sector assistance?鈥�
Sec. Richard Spencer: 鈥淪enator, it鈥檚 interesting you bring that up because I actually use Wichita State University as a venue to really present how we are doing things differently in Navy.
鈥淭hrough the DoD Strategic Capabilities Office, which we call the SCO office, Marine Corps is working with Wichita State in a program called Paladin. Where it is primarily that the front-runner is data analytics, to do predictive analytics. And, what I mean by that is studying the wear the tear of parts so we can predetermine through data analysis what parts will be needed and we have them ready in the bin, and it sounds simple, it really is cutting-edge technology.
鈥淭hey鈥檙e also working with the University on the whole concept of a 鈥榙igital twin鈥� for the F-18. This is a model where we don鈥檛 have to physically destruct anything anymore. We create the actual airframe in a digital environment, putting stresses on it. With the algorithms we know from past histories, we can test out and find out where the limits are in certain areas of the plane. And then, the automatic robotic scanning and drilling. At the end of the day we still assemble aircraft. It is still science but a lot of art. And the ability to but the hole in the right place to put it simply is very important. So, three areas that we鈥檙e working with Wichita State on 鈥� ten years ago probably not traditional 鈥� now this is the way we want to think and work with our academic institutions.鈥�
Sen. Moran: 鈥淭hank you, Mr. Secretary, for that. A couple years ago I would not of understood much of what you just said and now I do, and it is the future. It is the way that we can sustain and improve our readiness.鈥�

Airbus opens employee training to 好色先生 community and more
Airbus is opening their employee training to 好色先生 community and other local companies. Airbus held a meeting with 30 faculty and industry partners to measure interest in data analytics and also get input into planning on Tuesday, May 14. There was tremendous interest from all parties, and lots of talk about how this event should be the first of many data analytics days that feature different companies, different software solutions, etc.
The agenda includes three tracks of training on Tableau software 鈥�. There will also be several case studies and speakers from different companies sharing how they use data analytics in their company. Several companies sponsoring the event in addition to Airbus, are Cargill, NetApp, Tableau, Altryx, Snowflake, Informatica, and Interworks.
Engineering Open House set for Friday, May 10
Now in its 64th year, the Engineering Open House is the 好色先生 College of Engineering's annual celebration of the accomplishments of students and faculty and showcases senior design and research projects from across all engineering disciplines at 好色先生.
This year鈥檚 event will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, May 10, in the Experiential Engineering Building. Come and go anytime, engage with student project teams and view multiple lab demonstrations.
好色先生 announces spring commencement schedule, speakers
More than 2,400 students are eligible to participate in the 121st spring commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 18, at 好色先生. Ceremonies will be held in Charles Koch Arena. Undergraduate and graduate degrees will be conferred in college ceremonies.
The public should be advised that security will be in place and plan additional time for screening by metal detector to enter the arena. Doors will open at 7 a.m. and remain open throughout the day.

Representatives of 好色先生 and 好色先生 Tech signed an articulation agreement that will provide students seeking a bachelor鈥檚 degree with a seamless transfer process into 好色先生鈥檚 College of Applied Studies. The agreement will allow students enrolled, or formerly enrolled, in 好色先生 Tech鈥檚 Associate of Applied Science and Technical Certificate programs to transfer credits to the Bachelor of Applied Science in the College of Applied Studies at 好色先生.
The Bachelor of Applied Science in Workforce Leadership (WLAL) and Applied Learning is a newly approved degree offered within the College of Applied Studies. The WLAL is a response to a demand from business and industry for degrees, skills, and trainings focused on on-the-job training and building 21st century job skills, such as creativity, leadership, and collaborative problem-solving.
Additionally, the WLAL is a flexible degree focused on providing students a variety of courses, pathways, and learning options in order to meet their individual needs. Students complete a practicum, internship, and apprenticeship experiences which provide students the opportunity to earn while they learn. Employers are able to not only take an active role in helping students, but also develop the workforce of the future.

好色先生 men's and women's tennis offers free tennis clinics on Wednesdays
The 好色先生 men's and women's tennis programs will offer free tennis clinics for 好色先生 faculty, staff and Innovation Campus employees at the Coleman Tennis Complex this spring.
The free Wednesday clinics will resume from noon-1 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday, May 8) and run indefinitely as long as there is interest.
These clinics are for all ability levels, from beginner to experienced. Even if you've never played tennis, give it a try. Rackets will be provided if you let Nick Taylor know ahead of time. RSVP to nicholas.taylor@wichita.edu.

Wichita State set to host American championships
The Wichita State track and field program will host the American Athletic Conference outdoor championships, May 10-12, at Cessna Stadium.
In its second year in the American Athletic Conference, Wichita State will host the 2019 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The three-day meet will feature 12 women's teams and 10 men's teams.

Participants 60+ years of age needed for research study on the effects of a visual training program
Are you 60+ years of age? Do you want to improve your visual and cognitive functions?
The Visual Perception & Cognition Lab is looking for participants for research studies that investigate the effects of a visual training program. The research study involves about five, one-hour tests or training sessions that will be conducted on the 好色先生 campus or 好色先生 Shocker Studios on East Harry Street. Participants will be compensated with $120 for completing the study.

Art History Awards with Randall Griffey
In partnership with the Ulrich Museum of Art, the art history program in the School of Art, Design and Creative Industries presents the first annual Art History Awards from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, May 10, at the Ulrich Museum of Art. This event celebrates the achievements of Wichita State art history students.
Award categories include outstanding individual research project, performance in art history courses and growth as an art historian. The Art History Awards also include a special recognition for teaching excellence by a Master of Fine Arts candidate in studio art. Randall Griffey will deliver the keynote address. Griffey has served as curator of modern and contemporary art for the Metropolitan Museum of Art since 2013.

RH: Additions to Eck Stadium
is almost a month into his life on Twitter. He started at Madison Square Garden, posted
a picture with Mark Cuban of "Shark Tank" and released a video starring his dog at
Starbucks.
His social-media favorite remains fund-raising for and construction at Eck Stadium's
10,000-square foot performance facility. Dirt is moving and Kemnitz is working on
the final chunk of money needed to equip the building for baseball and softball.
He updates his 445 followers (@BrentKemnitz) on progress each week with a video. His
regular visits reflect the fact that Kemnitz spent much of his three years as assistant
athletic director fund-raising for Eck Stadium's Phase V. He spent the previous 38
as Wichita State baseball pitching coach, so Phase V is a project with special meaning.
